Jammy and Sonny McGann are brothers, but that's where the similarities end. One is calm when the other is angry; one has a plan while the other lives purely in the moment. When Jammy returns from Afghanistan a very different man to the one who left, it's Sonny who is left to hold things together. But just how far will he go to save the brother who always put him first?

I loved this book and felt engaged with all the characters especially the two brothers, Jammy and Sonny. Heroic is set in Afghanistan and on a council estate in London. Jammy signs up for the army and goes to fight in Afghanistan, he finds it hard to cope with army life and even harder to cope with dealing with civilians. Sonny tries to keep the gang that he and Jammy led going, but this proves very difficult. When Jammy comes home after his best friend has been killed in Afghanistan he finds it hard to adjust to civilian life and Sonny cannot understand why his brother is distant and distracted all the time. Things start to spiral out of control as Jammy feels immense guilt about events which happened in Afghanistan. The plot of this book is fast paced and highly charged, all the characters are carefully drawn and you feel sympathy with all of them. This was a challenging and engaging read.
