Beautiful book, beautiful story line, considered by some to be an early example of a feminist novel. Helen is indeed admirable as a feminist heroine. She reminds me a bit of Jane in 'Jane Eyre'. She has a sense of self and of morality that is inviolable. This book can be read as a straight-up gothic romance novel, but it’s more of a discourse on the perilous position of married women in Victorian England than it is a romance. You just read it and convince yourselves of this.
