Adam Kay was a junior doctor from 2004 until 2010, before a devastating experience on a ward caused him to reconsider his future. He kept a diary throughout his training, and 'This Is Going to Hurt' intersperses tales from the front line of the NHS with reflections on the current crisis. The result is a first-hand account of life as a junior doctor in all its joy, pain, sacrifice and maddening bureaucracy, and a love letter to those who might at any moment be holding our lives in their hands.

Hilarious! I'm not even a big reader, but I found myself breezing through the book. As a wannabe doctor, it really has given me an insight of what working within the NHS is like and how much pressure they are under but how undervalued they are. This book had me laughing hysterically one minute and desperately trying not to cry the next which has really motivated me to become a doctor (maybe not obs and gynae). I would recommend this book to everyone as it is tense yet relaxing, depressing yet funny, gruesome yet pleasant to read (if that made any sense what so ever).
