Notes:
20 days after Britain's dramatic vote to leave the European Union, a new Prime Minister entered Downing Street. Few were more surprised than Theresa May herself. At the start of this extraordinary summer, the formidable May had been on the cusp of becoming the longest-serving Home Secretary in history. Then the unexpected happened. David Cameron's sudden resignation unleashed a leadership contest like no other - and saw the showier rivals for the post of Prime Minister fall one by one with dizzying speed. Britain's second-ever female premier is a self-styled unflashy politician, a vicar's daughter whose commitment to public service was instilled during her Oxfordshire childhood. This book tells her story.

This is an excellent biography of Theresa May. Some caricature her as hard right. When she was Home Secretary she ditched Blair’s compulsory ID scheme. She admitted that she had voted wrongly on gay issues. She got the original, wrong Hillsborough disaster verdicts set aside. She curtailed the use of ‘stop and search’. She introduced the 2015 Modern Slavery Act. She introduced the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme – ‘Clare’s Law’ – so that women could find out if a potential or current partner has a criminal record for domestic violence. She cancelled the extradition of Gary McKinnon to the USA. Previous Labour Home Secretaries had all said he would have to go. There were four Labour Home Secretaries in five years, May lasted six years in the job, the longest stint for 50 years. If she can handle that job, she can handle the EU’s leaders. The British people have given her a job to do, to achieve independence. We must make sure that she makes a good job of it.
