This novel is based on the true story of Lale and Gita Sokolov, two Slovakian Jews, who survived Auschwitz and eventually made their home in Australia. In that terrible place, Lale was given the job of tattooing the prisoners marked for survival - literally scratching numbers into his fellow victims' arms in indelible ink to create what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust.
270 pages : illustrations (black and white), maps (black and white) ; 20 cm
The book was written in quite a bright and breezy style, which was a bit of a surprise considering the subject matter and consequently was read very quickly. I found the main character of Lale to be a bit irritating, if I'm honest, a bit too good to be true (though obviously he was a real person!) Overall, a very interesting read and view on a difficult subject.
