Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is both an autobiography of Caitlin Doughty, host of the excellent YouTube 'Ask a Mortician' show and a discussion of funerary customs both in different places and times. The writing style is engaging and funny despite its serious subject matter. As well as being very entertaining, the book also has an agenda. Doughty believes that people in the modern West are in denial about their mortality and that even the funeral industry tries to hide us from death. Through having a better relationship with death, we can have a better life and a better death. This book will certainly make you contemplate your mortality. A warning for the squeamish, however - this book is full of blood and guts and some readers might feel there is too much gory detail!
