Notes: Born under different stars, Protestant Mungo and Catholic James live in a hyper-masculine world. They are caught between two of Glasgow's housing estates where young working-class men divide themselves along sectarian lines, and fight territorial battles for the sake of reputation. They should be sworn enemies if they're to be seen as men at all, and yet they become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the doocot that James has built for his prize racing pigeons. As they begin to fall in love, they dream of escaping the grey city, and Mungo must work hard to hide his true self from all those around him, especially from his elder brother Hamish, a local gang leader with a brutal reputation to uphold. But the threat of discovery is constant and the punishment unspeakable.

It’s not a sequel to Shuggie although it is also set in a working class tenement in Glasgow in the 1980’s . Mungo’s family and background are very similar to Shuggie’s– an alcoholic mother, a protective older sister and a big brother who is the local gang leader. Mungo is 15 and a Protestant and he is gradually coming to realise that he is gay. He develops an unlikely friendship with a slightly older Catholic boy and they are terrified of being found out as they gradually fall in love. Not only because of their sexuality but also because of their religious differences. The story takes you through rape, gang warfare and murder too and is every bit as difficult to read as Shuggie is. Having said that it is well written and a powerful page turner and I really wanted to know what happened next. I won’t spoil the end for you but it is sort of happy. I’m not sure that I can say that I enjoyed it but I’m glad I read it.
