A clever and thought provoking novel which asks interesting questions about the extent to which any novel is wholly imagined or is derived from the real life of the novelist. The metafictional aspects actually bring some lightness and humour to the mainly grim subject matter of drug addiction, extra-marital affairs and family breakdown. The non-linear narrative technique can seem confusing at times, but it gives the novel a structure that helps to convey the mood swings of the narrator: her hope, despair and guilt as a mother, daughter, wife and writer. Ultimately, whilst I admired the writer's skill, and found much to admire in the novel, I was not greatly moved by what is a heartbreaking story.
