The book explores political and social issues, including democracy vs dictatorship and individualism vs social cooperation, and reflects the problems - economic, individual and social - in a changing America where wealth and power are synonymous. There's lots to enjoy and admire, with the ever shifting narrative viewpoints providing convincing voices for a host of different and distinct characters. There is humour too, although often of a dark variety, as we watch these people battle and suffer against the odds. Fans of Jonathan Franzen will probably enjoy this book.
