Alfred the Great is dead and Edward his son reigns as king. Wessex survives but peace cannot hold. The Danes in the north, led by Viking Cnut Longsword, stand ready to invade and will never rest until the emerald crown is theirs. Uhtred, once Alfred's great warrior but now out of favour with the new king, must lead a band of outcasts north to recapture his old family home, that great Northumbrian fortress, Bebbanburg. Loyalties will be divided and men will fall, as every Saxon kingdom is drawn into the bloodiest battle yet with the Danes.
303 pages : illustrations (black and white), map (black and white) ; 24 cm
I would rate this as 6. It was about 100 pages too long. I didn't enjoy the military descriptions on the battle fields - unnecessary in my view as the description of the main character is well brought out as experienced in battle and battle strategy. He is ruthless, vengeful and yet able to walk away from situations when he knows he is beaten rather than put the lives of his devoted followers at risk. Cornwell has brilliantly portrayed the future of England in turmoil between Anglo Saxons or Danes; between religious beliefs, between Kings and pseudo Kings and impact of invading forces.
